A popular home style seen throughout the country that began in California and the Midwest in the early 1900s, American Craftsman is most often associated with small- to medium-sized homes. Craftsman-style homes emphasize simplicity, clean lines, artisanal craftsmanship and natural materials. Craftsman homes showcased local materials with embellishments such as brackets, lintels and rafters. Spacious front porches with over-extended eaves are a tell-tale sign of Craftsman homes. The interior design is just as distinctive, with built-in bookshelves and window seats, and thick trim around doors and windows.
