Modern-style architecture came about as the antithesis of what some felt were the design excesses of the Victorian period. These homes featured a simplified design and sharp lines and were meant to blend into the surrounding nature with large windows and carefully landscaped areas. Built from approximately the 1920s through the 1950s, these homes emphasized function over form. An offshoot of Modern architecture, Mid-century Modern, is recognized today for its distinctive interior design and furniture, which saw a revival during the 1980s. With more recently built Contemporary Modern homes, eco-friendly materials and metal roofing separate these homes from their predecessors.
